You can always tell by the vin.
From a distance, they were just a fancier version. Some had a spoiler under the front bumper in the 80's. most (if left original or restored) will have super sport logos on them.
By far, the vin is the best way to check, because there are a lot of super sport clones out there being passed off as real ones.
There is another way,. look on the build plate in the glove box. If it has an option of Z91 or Z15 it is an SS.
Pretty easy because there was no El Camino SS in 1978.

usually the SS has a 350ci or 454ci but the 454 should say 454SS on the lower part of each door near the front fenders
