You could search for your Dell's make and model on the Dell website to find out which type of RAM you need, but there is an easier way. Crucial.com is an online RAM store. They have a "Scan My System" button on their home page. It can determine what type of RAM you need. Write down what it suggests and then compare prices at different shops.

∙ 16y agoUsually the RAM stick has a label on it saying what kind of RAM it is and how big it is, and it should say if it is DDR or DDR2. If not, don't know what to tell you.

∙ 12y agoThe key notch positions are different, check for frequencies also. DDR2 ranges from 400MHz - 800 MHz. Using overclocking it can go upto 1250MHz.
DDR3 : 1033-1600MHz.

There are 2 easy ways. No#1- Downlaod a 'system analysis' tool (e.g. CPU-Z) run the progamme and check its window. http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php No#2- Open the case, and look at the ram slots. DDR1 has 184 pins, DDR2 has 240 pins. The 'notch' in the ram stick is also in different places on DDR1 vs DDR2. After you have look at a few ram sticks, you can soon pick the difference between DDR1 amd DDR2, but in the beginning it is no so easy. There is quite often a sticker on the side of the ram telling you what type/speed it is to make things easier, but it can be hard to see inside the case. DDR1 also ranges from DDR-200 (PC-1600) to DDR-433 (PC-3500) and DDR2 ranges from DDR2-400 (PC2-3200) to over DDR2-1066 (PC2-8600)

No, pc5300 has more pins and won't fit. The above answer is incorrect. Both are 200 pin pieces. I dont know if the 5300 memory will work but the pin count is the same. Why would you want to ??? The faster Memory module PC5300 will clock down to the lower speed of the bus for the PC2700 . You are spending money for nothing. PLUS if you have issues and need tech support - they won't talk to you until you reinstall the PC2700 as they won't support memory not designed for the unit. All in all - a BAD idea. Both notebook DDR and DDR2 come as 200 pin chips. (unlike desktop ram where DDR has 180 and DDR2 has 240 pins). DDR2 was not designed to be backwards compatible with DDR. I want to know if the mobo will recongnize the difference, or if the slot in the ram is a different place. The reason you would want to buy DDR2 over DDR is A: faster. B: a 1 stick gig DDR PC 2700 ram costs about twice as much a 1 gig stick of DDR PC 5300 would.

No. You can put faster RAM in a motherboard that uses a lower speed, as long as the type of RAM (DDR, DDR2, DDR3, etc...) is correct. You just won't receive any speed benefit.
Is 512 SDR RAM or 256 DDR RAM better?
512 SDR. DDR2 is better, but more the memory better it is for your PC, irrespective of the memory technology. You have a point there but considering the current trends, i will prefer the DDR because sdram is being replaced with ddr. Especially if you planning to buy a new mother board, most MoBo's nowadays are of ddr. But speed and capability is better than having plenty of ram. It is with the speed of access not only the space. Besides, it's better to consider efficiency, right?
