How do you tell a male dog from a female dog?

The easiest way is to check under the tail - a male will have one opening (the anus) and a female will have two openings (the anus and the vulva).

One difference between human genitals and canine genitals is the penis on a dog will retract into a protective shaft when flaccid, and is directly observable only when the male is 'erect'. On human males, it just hangs there limp (when flaccid).

How to find a dog's sex, for the inexperienced layperson :

If one looks at the underside of a dog, a female dog will have a smooth 'belly', whereas a male dog will have a noticable 'shaft' on the lower 'belly'. If the dog's tail is held in an upright position, a female dog (when viewed from behind) will have a very small 'slit' in the skin right below the anus, whereas this area on a male dog will be smooth.

well i will assume you mean a puppy because an adult is pretty obvious as u see by the answers. puppies can be difficult if u don't know exactly what to look for. male pups don't "drop" right away meaning you cant see the testicles. now turn the little fella over and if u see an area that's raised near the belly its a boy -if its a girl u will see the area between her legs . sounds odd but this is how u sex a 1 minute old pup ;)

lift the dog up or just look behind its belly. if there is a penis (sheathed) it is male. if it is unneutered there will be testicles hanging between the back legs.

If your dog is male, he will have an object projected out from under his belly close to his hind legs. It may be hard to find if your dog has longer hair.

If your dog is female, she will not have anything projecting from under her belly.

If dog is an female it will have nothing on the lower belly.

If dog is male it will have a testicle(penis) on lower body.

You look to see if it has a penis or a vagina.

On a male dog, the penis is visibly hanging underneath. Its foreskin is attached to the abdominal wall and usually covered with fur.
