When a hermit crab is depressed he will slow down in his activities and often sit in one places with very little movement. This isn't quite the same as humans feel depressed or sad but they do have basic needs and when those needs aren't met, they suffer.

If a hermit crab is under a lot of stress (usually do to their environment not being properly set up) they will start to lose limbs, or lose its color and turn into a light, white/ pinkish color. If this occurs then the hermit crab will eventually die. To learn how to properly care for hermit crabs (and make them live for over 10 years) go to hermitcrablovers142.webs.com

My hermit crabs are now 6 years old because I properly learned how to care for them! XD

It's pretty hard to tell if your crab is unhappy. If your crab isn't coming out at night nor when you give him/her a bath, he/she MIGHT be unhappy, or that crab might jus be shy. If you find detached legs or hermit crab body parts, that might be another sign your crab is unhappy. Just make sure your tank is the right temperature and humidity level. And make sure theres plenty of food and water and your house isn't too loud.

Despite their name, hermit crabs in nature live in rather large colonies. I'm not sure that a hermit crab has enough intelligence to be considered "lonely", but it isn't natural for them to live without other hermit crabs around.
