Check the headlights relay. Turn the switch on and off. Listen for activation. If not it will be hard testing because they are in the steering column.
It may be a defective brake light switch. The location of the brake lights fuse is listed in your owner's manual.
It's not a light switch! It's not a light switch!
Check the brake light switch for proper adjustment or possibly it is defective. You will find it mounted on the brake lever under the dash, or possibly it is a pressure switch connected to the master cylinder. Any VW dealer can tell you where it is.
On the left hand side by your steering wheel theres a swtich with a light on it. Press it. I cannot tell by your question WHICH brake light you're talking about. If it is on the instrument panel, then I don't know. However, if you're talking about the brake lights on the rear of the vehicle staying on, then the cause is probably a misadjusted brake light SWITCH. Or the switch could be defective.
If you are referring to the can light, there is a manual switch on the light that allows it to operate when the doors is closed or to automatically turn on when the door is open and then shut off when the door is closed. If the switch is in this position and the light is staying on, the switch in the door to tell it to turn off is probably not working. if it keeps flashing on and off
The check engine light is on because the ECU has detected a problem with the emission system. You will need to have the ECU scanned with all OBD2 scan tool to retrieve the code that has been set. This code will tell you what part is being affected. But, it will not necessarily tell you what part is defective. To determine the defective part takes diagnostic skills.
you are approaching head on.
First, find the switch. Make sure no wires have come loose from the connectors. If they have, fix them. If that's OK, try to manually operate the switch while someone looks at the lights. If they come on, the switch position needs to be adjusted. If that fails, short across the connectors on the switch and see if that makes the lights come on. If so, you need a new switch.
