How do you tell if my goldfish is about to lay eggs?

Spawning gold fish are very active in backyard ponds.

They will "flash" - show their bellies, and chase each other around the pond.

When they go to lay their eggs you will see the females hovering on the bottom of the pond liner, and the males come over them, spreading their silt to fertilize the eggs.

Having goldfish spawn in a backyard pond is very exciting. To ensure that some of the newly hatched fry live to maturity and are not eaten by the adults in the pond, have some aquatic plants in the pond. I had great success with the hairy roots of water hyacinth.

The abdomens of goldfish that are about to lay eggs will usually swell up/become larger. The fish may also interact more with other fish in the tank or may have male fish chasing their rears. However, if the fish starts sitting exclusively at the bottom of the tank or is acting lethargic, the fish is sick- not ready to spawn. Sick fish should never be bred.
