Remove it and have it tested at an auto parts store
Take out the starter take take off the back lid and you will see the two clips inside that rub against the motor kind of like motor brushes. if they are worn replace them and you will have a new starter. you will hear a clicking noise when they are bad and you will not get your starter to start. Yes you can, just make sure that you tape the button down...and don't forget or forget to tell others about it...because it can be dangerous...as a PEP Boys tech. found out a couple weeks ago, working on my 91 Tercel

The 3 speed automatic was the only A/T installed that year. There was also a 5 speed manual.
I have a '95 Tercel and the OBDII port is located inside the fuse box cover on the lower left side of the dash to the left of the steering wheel. If you go to a parts store they will tell you it doesn't exist, so just open the cover and show them. It is in fact there.

I would guess r134a. There should be a sticker around the ports on the lines that tells you....if not, go to an auto parts store or run by a mechanic and it will take them about 1 minute to tell ya.
