The only way I know of is to remove a valve cover. If the valves do not move when the engine is turned over, the timing chain is broken. As a best guess, if the engine cranks like crazy, and seems to crank faster or with less resistance than normal, it's a good chance. There's no telling when a chain will break, depends mostly on driving habits. My '95 made it to 199,000 before it went, whereas others will go at 60,000.
