Schizophrenia is rarely used now as it was a term they were using to cover a wide array of mental disorders. The medication for schizophrenia was usually the same regardless of symptoms but as doctors learn more things change.
Things that show early signs of a psychiatric condition are very wide and varied. Some people withdraw into themselves, others become suddenly very extraverted. Some mutter to themselves constantly some do nothing and we don't see the signs until it is too late.

Generally amphetamine users will display "schizophrenic" behavior early in their habit. Heroin users may have problems that are reduced or hidden by the heroin. Marijuana is thought to induce the behavior and I don't doubt it. Marijuana can make the smoker paranoid and after smoking every day for a while the paranoia becomes real.
If you're worried about a family member, talk to a counsellor before you talk to them. If they have a problem they may see your talking to them about it as threatening or heighten their paranoia. Talk to a doctor or mental health professional before you do anything else.
