On 1990-93 models, Volvo uses three types of fuel systems - Bosch LH-Jetronic, Bendix Regina, and Bosch Motronic. "[Bendix ] Regina and post-1994 cars have only one pump". (my info source is http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/FuelSystem.htm#FuelPumpandFIRelayDiagnosticTests) In the Regina case, that single pump is located in the fuel tank.

On my 90 740gl it is right next to the ignition coil. It depends on the ignition system used. On a Regina ignition, I think everything is built in the coil (The big square one) The regular round coil is for BOSCH ignition and a separate module is use. NOT SURE, would appreciate confirmation.

I had replace Bosch Platinum plugs with Volvo plugs to remedy miss firing. The Bosch Plugs worked for five to six months before I noticed the engine shuttering during acceleration, and a mechanic at a Volvo dealership told me that only Volvo plugs would work. The advice seemed a bit odd. Although, the problem was eliminated with the Volvo plugs.

There are two fuel pumps. One in-tank pump with a sock filter and the main pump is under the car, about midway on the passenger side (right hand drive). See manual for correct removal procedure. Depends on the fuel system Bosch or Regina. A Regina system has just one pump that is located in the fuel tank. It is not a very pleasant taks to replace. Sometimes the wiring where it passes through the sending unit breaks down and it becomes necessary to replace the whole sending unit. Also depending on the production date you may also have to replace the feed line from the sender to the fuel line on the body of the car.
