There are several indications of a horse's age, many similar to those seen in humans. Old horses will move more slowly and with less spring in their step. A black, brown or other non-grey horse that has grey or white hairs around its muzzle is probably old. The hair in an older horse's mane and tail thins, and mares may come on heat less frequently. The easiest way to tell a horse's age is by looking in its mouth. A very young horse will still have its milk teeth, which are smaller and whiter. After 6 months the milk teeth start to fall out. By age 4, most horses have a complete set of adult teeth. When they come through they are straight, white and not worn. You can tell how old a horse is by the slope and amount of wear on its teeth. Sometimes they look a bit older and gray hairs can appear around I think 20+ on a horse/pony.
But you can never tell the exact age of a horse unless you have identification with DOB or something. That's why a lot of rescued horses I need of rehoming say age unknown.
The horses teeth, that way you can figure out up to five years close. When a horse gets really old, his back starts to sway, around that time you should stop riding him.

∙ 15y agoWell, horse's teeth change as they grow. There are charts, etc. you can look up online to see what the teeth look like at different ages. If the teeth are very small or not present, it is probably under a year old.

∙ 15y agoAs with all horses you can tell their age by looking at their teeth. Ask a equine dentist to have a look at your horse next time you speak to one and they can tell you how old your horse is :)

∙ 15y agoIf it is thoroughbred that is going to be racin, the birthday for all thoroughrbeds is Jan. 1st, because of how many there are and how the races are set up by age and it is much easier to watch how old horses are this way.
