The name(s) of American diesel locomotives usually appear near the front underneath the cab, near the front truck; a Dash 9's name appears there. I'm pretty sure...
Simple, they haven't made "GAS" powered loco's since the 50's i think. The sound- diesel are a low pitch rumble and gas is a higher pitch scream. The smoke is whiter in gas also. Most gas powered are now in museums- in USA anyway.
how can i tell if diesel pump works
Diesel fuel smells the same as home heating oil.

you can tell alot by the sound
It is used on extremely heavy vehicles such as dump trucks in a mine or locomotive. The design is: a diesel engine drives a electric generator. Then the electricity is distributed to electric motors that drive the road wheels. This design eliminates clutches, gearboxes and drive shafts. Today, some ships have similar design. The difference is the electric motors drive propellers instead of road wheels.
you can tell by the style and you could ask someone.
Rudolph Diesel in 1897. Go to wikipedia.org and type in "diesel engine" and it will tell you everything you want to know.
A person can tell the difference between diesel and petrol by the smell. Diesel is going to smell more like oil. Gasoline smells more like vinegar.
