Look up, and when the sun is halfway across the sky between east and west it is 12 noon local time. Well, the above is true from both a practical and scientific standard, but not always true in a political sense. For example: China is wide enough from east to west that it really should have four time zones, but for political reasons the Chinese government decided that the whole country would have just one time zone. see the Related Link below for a map of world time zones.

Time has from beginning of time been calculated with the help from the sun.

When it becomes light, the day starts. When it get dark, the day ends.

In the early years, we just used a stick in the ground and its shadow as the indicator for what time it was.

As societies grew, we made mechanical instruments in order to also tell time during the night. Not very accurate in the beginning, but man strives for perfection.

When the clocks started to become common, the societies started to rely more on them. Simple terms as light or dark was not enough. Man had to go to work at specific times, not only when it was light enough to do work. Early in the mornings, we created our own light in order to do more work.

As time of sunrise changes very much during the days in the year, we have (on northern and southern part of our earth) less or more daylight depending on which day, week, month, season it is.

During summer we have more light, and during winter we have less light.

In today's societies of watches and timekeeping schedules, we follow the clock. The old days of only following the light has gone.

During war, it was suggested to save energy by using daylight better. This was instated by shifting the clock one hour back in order to get more out of the daylight during summer, and vice versa one hour forward during winter.

Some countries do not use DST (Daylight Saving Time), where as other countries do. All of this together adds to the complexity of telling the time in different places on the earth.

It is however generally accepted all over the world that when the stick in the ground leaves the shortest possible shadow during the day, the time is 12, and the we add or deduct the hour of DST for countries who follow this.

What causes variation in time at different places on earth?

Since the Earth tilts on an axis, different places both in the northern and southern hemisphere will be facing the sun, so the different places of the earth have the sun in different places, therefore, the different places of the earth have different time zones.

Why climates different at different places on earth?

Different places experience different climates on Earth because of the Earth's tilting at a certain angle. As Time goes by, and the earth keeps rotating, the angle of its appearance towards the sun keeps changing, which explains why different places experience different climates

Why does Erathosthenes measurement tell us the Earth is spherical to a good approximation?

Eratosthenes found out that shadows were not consistent at the same time of day in different places. He reasoned that the Earth must be a sphere to allow this.

Why are constellations seen in different places at different times?

There are two reasons. First, the Earth is rotating, so over the course of a night they seem to move across the sky. Second, the Earth is orbiting the sun, so we are looking at different parts of the sky throughout the year. However, at the same time on the same date of the year, you will see the constellations in the same places. So you can tell the time of year and even the time of night by looking at them.

In an experiment six people at different places around the Earth drop an apple at the same time Which apples will fall to the Earth?

Why is the time in Beijing China different from the time in New Jersey?

China and New Jersey exist in different time zones because they are on different parts of the earth. The sun is not at the top of the sky at both places at the same time, so noon comes at different times and the clock time in the two places must therefore be different.

What explains the fact that different places on earth have different seasons at the same time of theyear?

How can you prove that the earth is moving around the sun?

if it's not the sun rays won't reach different places in the same time

Why is it not the same time everywhere on earth?

It is not the same time everywhere on earth because of the position of the sun. Because the Sun can not be on all sides of the earth at once, time must be different, other wise in a foreign country like Japan it would be 9:00 am and be dark as night but to them it would be morning. So to control this times are different.

How does sunrise and sunset prove the earth is spherical?

Sunrise and sunset occur at different times for locations at different longitudes on Earth. This is because the curved shape of the Earth causes the Sun to be visible from some places while it is still below the horizon for others. This phenomenon is only possible on a spherical Earth and cannot be explained on a flat Earth model.

Do all places on earth have the sun at the same time?

yes
