Basically - do some research !
There are MANY books on reptiles available at your local library to help you care for geckos successfully.
One point to not - if you're going to release it back into the wild - make sure you set it free in the same area you found it !
You can go online to like, www.leopardgecko.com and look it up!!!!!
Make sure your gecko is fully grown and is mature, though. I went to the website above and went under:AVALIBLE, LEOPARD GECKO, because there is a list of types of leopard gecko's there!!!!!!!!! I found out what mine is in about 15 minutes!

Find a dicotomus key based on the geographic location of the lizard found. If you are dealing with an exotic try to find a very broad dicotmus key online to help "key" out the lizard you are trying to identify
If you would like someone on this site to tell you what kind of lizard you have, give us a detailed description of the lizard. How big is it? What color is it? What other features do you notice about it?
YOU should already know what kind of snake you have ! If you don't know what species it is - (a) you CANNOT care for it's daily needs successfully and (b) you have no idea whether it is venomous or not !
Researching the species BEFORE you got it would have been better than being forced into asking questions on here ! If you declined to do any research before you got the animal, then quite frankly, you don't deserve to own a reptile ! I've spent more than TWENTY-FIVE YEARS in the reptile business, and am SICK of taking in unwanted 'pets' because their owners failed to do the necessary research on the animal they were keeping !
Lizards and gecko's have scutes on their skin, wich prevents drying out. Amphibians have no scutes and a sticky or warty skin.
The most common type of house pet of the gecko is the leopard gecko and other geckos
