To test the crankshaft sensor on a 1999 BMW E36 M3, start by visually inspecting the sensor and its wiring for any signs of damage or corrosion. Then, use a multimeter to check the sensor's resistance; it should typically read between 500 to 1,500 ohms, depending on the specific sensor type. If the resistance is out of this range, the sensor may need replacing. Finally, you can also test the sensor's output signal while cranking the engine; it should produce a consistent voltage signal.

The crankshaft position sensor on a BMW E36 318 is typically located on the engine block, near the transmission bell housing. Specifically, it can be found on the driver's side, towards the rear of the engine. Accessing it may require removing some components for better visibility and reach. Always consult the vehicle's service manual for detailed instructions and diagrams for your specific model year.
