Most of the time you can just look at one and tell if it is blown. If not, you can test it with an ohm meter.
There are many fuses, there are fuses for different components in a car. It also depends on what car model it is and what year it is.
If the car does not work afterwards You'll want to check all fuses and have an auto parts store test the battery. It is likely that you have fried the battery and will need to replace it and if not for fuses this would fry the electrical system, however car's have fuses to avoid this, therefore a fuse is likely blown, check underhood fuses as well as under dash ones.

I have found them myself ... my car is a right-hand drive car and the fuses are on the left-hand side, under the dashboard with a protective panel that opens down (protects the fuses from your feet etc)
