Not only covers installation, but there are instructions on testing.
Why does it really matter? Are you going to test this out? You're sick.
You can either use a multimeter or a lab scope. When using a multimeter check the 12 volts from the battery at the connector then take the sensor out and check the resistance from the sensor's pins. Check the specs from the manufacturer. Although a correct spec does not necessarily means the sensor is good. This sensor normally fails when they are hot and not when they are cold. The advantage of using a lab scope is that you can test the sensor while the car is hot and running and by seeing the wave
Test or replace the sensor in the radiator side tank.

I'm not a fan of Ford, personally, but Ford has really upped their game in the past few years, and the quality of their vehicles is much better now. The sixth generation Taurus gets good reviews, has a good power-to-weight ratio, and gets excellent crash test safety ratings. But remember, a car can only be as good as how it's maintained.
P0500 is loss of vehicle speed signal. You need to test the speed sensor.
If you have the starter out of the car, there are many auto parts stores that will test them for you for free. They know that if it is bad, you will probably purchase a new one there. Testing them yourself can be dangerous because of the torque involved and electricity.
