I had to do this too, you take it to Autozone an they'll test it for you because I had to replace the same on mine. So hope that helps
On the starter.
The starter solenoid is on the left side fenderwell next to the battery.
It could be a weak battery. The starter solenoid may be defective. If so a rebuilt starter could cure the problem.
The first clue would be if the car doesn't turn over :)

PCM stands for Powertrain Control Module on a Mercury Sable
The starter solenoid is mounted directly to the starter. Just follow the positive battery cable from the battery, it will lead you right to the starter solenoid.
the computer for a 1993 ls mercury sable is by the top of the engine on the pasinger side a black box is on it you only have to unplug it
The solenoid is located on the passenger side on top of the starter motor.

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal 2. Remove the air intake duct and the air cleaner box from the engine compartment 3. Disconnect the battery cable and the solenoid terminal from the starter solenoid 4. Remove the starter mounting bolts
It's attached to the starter.
