Mycobacteria grow slowly, are protected from lysis once phagocytized, are capbable of intracellular growth, resistant to gram staining, many antimicrobial drugs, and from desiccation(drying out). mycobacteria are hard to treat and require a long treatment

The acid-fast nature of mycobacterium contributes to its virulence because its waxy cell wall makes it hard for other cells to phagocytize it. The mycobacterium is therefore likely to live, reproduce and cause disease.

Cell wall lipids resist drying and stress which allows it to survive. Cells are not digested by phagocytes. Mycolic acid is a wax like lipid on cell walls of acid fast organisms. Makes cell wall impermeable to most stains.
