How do you tighten the belt tensioner on a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Loosen the top two bolts on the Power Steering pump. then loosen the bolt in the center of the idler pulley (below power steering pump) looking at the engine from the front of car, locate the tensioning bolt at the lower left side of the power steering pump bracket.Turn this bolt clockwise to tighten belt until you get 1/4 to 1/2 inch deflection when belt is pushed in between pulleys. Tighten all bolts that you loosened.

You don't tighten the tensioner. It holds tension with an internal spring. If the tensioner is weak, it will allow the belt to slip slightly causing the belt to glaze. A glazed belt would be the cause of squeaking problems. There is no belt conditioner that will quiet a glazed belt for any length of time. So if the belt is slipping, then you need to replace the belt. You may also need to replace the tensioner, so check it carefully for alignment, looseness, or worn bearing.

Be careful though. the 1994 4.0 liter straight 6 engine did not use a spring loaded tensioner. This answer is incorrect for the 1994 4.0. That engine uses the Power Steering pump as the tensioner. There is a lower bolt facing the radiator under the pump on the adjustment bracket, then a bolt facing the right tire (Standing in front of the car and facing the engine), then two bolts on the back of the pump. Loosen all these and the pump can be manipulated to remove tension on the belt.
