You put the oil in the gearbox
You can check the automatic gearbox oil on a 1993 Ford Laser 1.5 using the oil stick.
change at least every 25,000 auto transmission oil does not last as long as manual gearbox oil, all to do with friction and heat in an auto box, pays to replace filter as well
There is no level indicator on the gearbox. The oil is checked by topping it up.

The Ford Fusion V6 takes 6.0 quarts of 5/20 engine oil, including the filter.
I think the Festiva manual transmission uses ATF The auto parts store or the owners manual will tell you

According to the 2008 Ford Fusion Owner Guide ( 5W-20 )
If its an auto, its low gearbox oil and the shudder is the pump cavitiating
