To top up the hydraulic fluid in a VW MK 1 Golf, you need to locate the hydraulic fluid reservoir attached to the brake master cylinder. Unplug the electrical fluid sensor and Fill the reservoir to the ÒMaxÓ mark.
This process is a bit_ _. There is an tension arm with a pulley. It is spring loaded. It is a very string spring. Where the arm goes insto the pully, there is a bend in the arm. VW has a specialized tool for this. Some folks have put pictures up on the internet of a home made tool that can do the job . (yahoo groups 93 eurovan has one in their archive.) I ended up using an adjustable wrench, a 12" crescent wrench was able to grip onto the arm, move it while I slid the belt off a pully. Danger/Caution The spring is strong. You may want to move and hold the arm a few times before removing the belt. Don't get you fingers caught.
top up the oil or change the oil sender unit ???
Right in the middle of the engine area is a black oil cap. In there.
ATF+3 or the newer ATF+4 ONLY!!!!! Using Dexron/Mercon or ATF will cause problems with the transmission and due to there not having the proper additives for the correct lubrication of the gears and can cause the transmission to 'burn up'.
Depends on gearbox ( auto or manual ). Front of gearbox a little way up near to bellhousing. Requires hex key.
93 eurovan Manula Transmission If you want more power, get a 2000-2003. These have nice V6 engines and improved steering that makes them much easier to drive overall. The difference between 1999 5 cylinder and 2000 VR6 is well worth paying more for, especially if you live at or intend to spend time at high elevations. You can drive uphill at 10000 ft. with the AC on in a VR6 and keep up with highway traffic, whereas you'd be putting along the shoulder with a 5 cylinder model from one year earlier. Manual transmissions in these model years are more reliable than the automatics. If you do get an automatic, have it checked out by a VW mechanic before purchase.
