Depends on a number of things. If it's a 4x4 with a manual transmission and/or manual transfer case (or a four button electronic transfer case with a neutral button), you can put the transmission and transfer case in neutral and tow it how you please - so long as it's a 4x4 with a longitudinal engine setup.
Some vehicles, such as the Ford Escape, use a transverse engine setup and have a transaxle (much the same as any front wheel drive vehicle does, with the addition of a transfer case). Flat towing such vehicles is never recommended. For the front wheels, you would either have to dolly them or install manual locking hubs and keep them in the unlocked position. For the rear, since these transfer cases typically don't have a neutral position, you'd have to disconnect the driveshaft if those wheels were going to remain on the road. The simplest way to do these is to trailer them.
On vehicles with automatic transmissions and transfer cases which do not have a neutral position available, you're looking at disconnecting driveshafts if you want to flat tow them. For the steer axle, you can unlock the hubs if you have manual locking hubs instead of disconnecting the front driveshaft, but the driveshaft to the rear axle will still need to be disconnected.
Yes, you can tow a 4x4 vehicle the same as any other vehicle. The front axle or (differential) is not engaged until you put the transfer case into gear. When in the 2WD High range you are towing a 2WD vehicle.

with a tow truck
Usually if the 4x4 selector (transfer case) has a nutral selection then it can be pulled with a tow bar (not a tow dolly) all 4 tires must roll if the 4x4 selector has a 2 wd
flat tow 4 wheel drive ranger
no you can not tow a vehicle with an auto trans on a dolly if the drive axle is on the ground. the auto trans does not circulate fluid to the parts unless the engine is running.
Compare the GVW of the trailer with the towing capacity of the tow vehicle.
The 4x4 Crew Cab Ute is the perfect tow vehicle for boats, caravans, and trailers. It is comprised of features such as an 8.1L/100km AT*, a 4x4 Drivetrain, Manual & Auto, 3 tonne braked, 6 air bags, ESC, TCS, ABS, EBD, and brake assist. It is an affordable vehicle overall.
As long as the vehicle is secured and marked properly and there are identifiable turn and brake lights on the vehicle in tow. Using the hazards on the vehicle in tow is illegal in most states. Contact your local DMV to make sure.
No.
It is not recommended to tow all four wheels down. Chrysler wants you to use a vehicle dolley and tow with either front of the vehicle up or rear of vehicle up in the dolley. Just reading from the service manual. I cant even find a procedure do it if you do tow with four wheels on ground. Hope this helps.
Yes - just put the transfer case in neutral.
