You have to have an original DS system (DS PHAT) or a DS lite, because you need the GBA game card slot, which the new DS systems don't have. After you beat the elite four, an area called the pal park opens up somewhere around the bottom right corner of the map, which allows you to migrate Pokemon from your old ruby, sapphire and emerald games onto your pearl, diamond and platinum games. To import Pokemon, you must insert the ruby game card into the GBA cartridge slot in the DS, and start up Pearl (which is in the other slot). On the main menu (the one just after the title screen), you will see an option called 'migrate from ruby' - choose this. You will then be taken to your PC boxes in ruby, where you must select a total of 6 Pokemon to advance further. The selected Pokemon will then be let loose in the pal park, where you then must catch them to be able to keep them. But, you cannot trade any Pokemon that you have migrated onto pearl back to ruby, and you cannot migrate Pokemon from pearl to ruby, for obvious reasons. Hope this helps :)
