Retrieving is a hard thing to teach a dog. If you are working on that you definitely want to break it down into steps such as picking up the ball, bringing the ball back (it helps to have a leash for this), and dropping the ball.
Most dogs won't drop a ball unless there is a reason for them to do so. Think about it, would you want to give someone your cool new toy in exchange for nothing? Often times if you offer a dog a treat in exchange for the ball he will give up the ball. I would suggest using a good treat such as a bit of cheese, peanut butter, Hot Dogs bits, or small pieces of chicken.
After a bit your dog should start to willing give up his ball. I would keep some treats in your pocket still, regular dog treats would do.
