According to the National Jousting Association a joust was a single combat between two horsemen. To train they had a practice field where they would ride against various objects and practice hitting them while on the horse. Manuscripts show a person training on a wooden horse pulled by several men. The person had to hit a rectangular board lined with thick rope to prevent slipping. The board had a slit so the trainer could see what his trainee was doing. Practice tournaments were held with a few set rules and practice targets were used. One was called the quintain which was a wooden target mounted on a pole at which the knight aimed his lance. If the target was struck accurately it would swing harmlessly aside. If stuck off center the weighted arm would swing around with enough velocity to unseat the knight.
