Любимый means "favorite". My love is really = Моя любовь. (moya lyubov'). Unless of course you are not calling someone your love, but read on if this is your intention. Well if you call someone lyubimy, then you are calling them "your favorite." It is like talking about your favorite television show or book. The adjective for love is любовный (lyubovniy).

Russian consists of three noun genders: Masculine, Feminine, and neuter. любовь is not only feminine noun, but it is also the female name. it is not good to call a male "my love." But you can call them "my dear".

мой дорогой (moy dorogoy) - Male.

Моя дорогая (moya dorogaya - Female.

Usually though to refer affectionately to someone in Russian you should use a affectionate name.

Like for Yuri = Yurochka. Olga - Olenka. Svetlana - Svetochka.
