Before answer this question you need to know what it is used for. I will consider you are already knew it so now we can answer this question .Trap steam usually content of two main part , first prevent to steam escape , and the second part let the condensate and all non-condensable gas such (CO2 and air) . Now there are many technology to make it trap steam , I will remind two of them . First method is Inverter Bucket trab or simply IB trab , the criteria is simple just bring a bucket of course it's open on top side and a turn it upside down , take this bucket and set it at position the bottom is facing the nozzle of pipe (pipe is connected to streamline suction) . now cover whole that by metal house since there is no leakage available . before you make another step you should make a metal lip ( object of it is close office made in the top of cover ) , this lip have ability to close downstream line .

To allow air and non-condensable gases to escape you should make a " Vent air" , on the bucket of course in upper face .

Depends on the type of steam trap BUT basically it prevents steam from passing through the trap and alllows cooler condensate /air to pass
