The loss of feathers on a hens back although not pretty to look at is not usually bad.

You can separate the hen from the rooster for awhile and the feathers will grow back.

Do chickens pluck their own feathers?

well guess not maybe. All birds molt their feathers, usually in the fall or late summer. They do this because the feathers get old and start to fray. The molt is done gradually and may take a couple of months so the bird is never missing too many feathers at the same time.

Will chickens feathers grow back if another chicken pick them out?

Yes, feathers are a renewable resource for chickens. Make more room in the chicken coop or remove the offending feather plucker.

If a rooster loses his long tail feathers will they grow back?

Yes. The long tail feather often drop off during the first molt when all the roosters feathers are replaced by new one's. The new long feathers will take more time to regrow so be patient, they will come back. Many roosters lose the long feathers due to picking from the hens while they roost at night

How do cockatuiels mate?

The rooster chooses the hen he wishes to mate with. He will approach her and do a side step dance and dip his wings to the ground indicating he is interested. If she runs away he may chase her or just go on to another hen. After he has done his "mating" dance he grabs her by the feathers on the back of her neck and stands on her back. The hen facilitates this by crouching low to the ground. Once the rooster has positioned himself on top of her back she raises her tail and inverts her cloaca, the rooster lowers his cloaca to hers and a sperm sac is transferred. The rooster then jumps off the hen and goes on to search for another hen. The hen will shake herself, fluff her feathers up and go on foraging for her daily food.

How can I stop my hens from attacking my rooster?

There are two main reasons they do this. The usual culprit is too much light when they are roosting at night. The coop needs to be very dark with no lights inside overnight. The other main reason is overcrowding. Provide more roosting space or reduce the size of the flock. Chickens roosting in limited space maintain the "pecking order" and the lower ranked birds get on the roost with the "boss" birds then get picked on.

Why do you think the brood patch is featherless?

If you are referring to the "saddle" which is the middle of the chickens back near the tail, it is from rooster friction. It is where the rooster stands on her back during the mating process and the feathers wear away. Don't worry, they will grow back during the next molt.

Is it okay for Polish chickens have bald spots?

Most likely your hens are molting but if the bald spot is on the saddle...the area on the back just above the tail, what is happening is the rooster is wearing away the feathers from mating with the hen. This is normal and will last until the next molting period when the hen will not allow the rooster to mount her and her feathers will re-grow.

Are hens supposed to lose their feathers?

Yes. hens can lose feathers for several reasons. Molt is a time when all chickens lose and renew their feathering. Hens can lose feathers from mating and from pecking by other chickens during roosting hours. Chickens who are sick can also lose feathers. Feathers will grow back.

Why did a chicken die it had most feathers gone from its back?

The chicken may have died from picking. This happens when the hens are bored, overcrowded, or have lack of protein in their diet so they result to cannibalism, beginning with feather picking, or plucking the feathers from other chickens. Another reason is from breeding. A rooster may find a "favorite" hen and mate her continually, mounting on her back each time and wearing the feathers out.

When a rooster pulls out hen fathers can you treat it?

There is nothing to technically "treat" unless the rooster has wounded the hen during mating. If this occurs, the wound can be sprayed with Red Kote daily to prevent infection and help it to heal, or you can cleanse the area and pack with neosporin. As far as the missing feathers, to prevent any further damage, you can purchase a "hen saddle" which is a piece of cloth shaped for a hen's back to prevent damage from the rooster's spurs and claws during mating.

Do rooster combs grow back?

Roosters and hens have combs and waddles to cool themselves. We sweat to cool ourselves, and chickens have combs and waddles to cool themselves.

How come the hens that are sitting on the eggs are losing feathers?

This is called molting. It is the time when chickens renew their feathers. Old feathers fall out and new one's grow back. The chicken uses much of their energy doing this and egg production slows when this happens.
