Epilepsy is a condition characterized by recurrent seizures. Seizures come in many flavors, including myoclonic, tonic-clonic, and absence, just to name a few. An individual's epileptic seizures may be dominated by one or more types. Pharmacologic agents used to treat epilepsy target the seizure types experienced by patients.

Some drugs used in the treatment of epilepsy include carbamazepine, valproic acid, phenytoin, and ethosuximide. All are considered anti-epileptic drugs. These agents work by pressing on the brain's brakes to inhibit the overactivity that leads to seizures. In addition you can do less stressful activities to calm down your brain and you heart rate.

Epilepsy can usually only be controlled and rarely cured. Some people will stop having seizures after a period of time, depending on what actually caused them. Some children have epilepsy that goes when they get older. For some extreme cases, people have surgery on their brains to remove damaged parts, which can reduce or cure their epilepsy. For most people though it is about control, so people will have to take their tablets without missing a single dose.

You cannot treat a seizure as such. You cannot stop it happening. If you are with a person that is having one, all you can do is let the seizure run its course and be there for them as they come out of it. During the course of the seizure, make sure they are comfortable and don't do any injury to themselves by falling or hitting into something. They may be a bit sick or disorientated when the seizure finishes, so they will need help and re-assurance. There is no need to panic. That does no good. It is good for them to have someone they know there when they come out if you are a friend. If it is a stranger and there is no one with them, then having someone there to help is good. If the seizure lasts a long time or the person has several seizures one after another, you should call for medical assistance.

It isn't a single condition, so there is no single cure. There are many forms and many causes. Everyone is different. The reason one person has epilepsy may have no connection whatsoever to why another person has it. So being able to cure one of those two people does not mean it will help the other.

Each person needs different kinds of treatment. Depending on what causes their epilepsy and how it is treated will determine how long they have it. Some people may have epilepsy for life, others for a shorter period. Epilepsy is treated through medication. It can be controlled and seizures limited, but you cannot always get rid of it completely.
