It depends on which version of the firmware you have. If you have the most recent version, double-click the home button to bring up the multi-tasking menu. Slide the multi-tasking menu bar to the right. The screen orientation icon is on the far left and looks like an arrow going around in a circle. If there is a padlock icon in the middle of the circle, that means the iPad's orientation is locked. Tap the icon to unlock it. You can re-lock the orientation by tapping this icon again.
