Windows Laptop

Under the Windows operating system, you use the Alt key to make special symbols not visible on the regular keyboard.

To make the ¢ symbol on your Windows laptop, hold down the Alt key and type 0162.

Mac Laptop

Under the Mac operating system, you use the Option key to make certain special symbols.

To make the ¢ symbol on your Mac laptop, hold down the Option key and type 4 (note that Shift + 4 makes the dollar sign).

[Note: You will see this shortcut printed elsewhere as Alt+0162 or Option+4. Do not type the + sign.]

You use it after a number standing for cents without any dollars attached. It cost 45 (insert cent symbol here). I don't have a cent symbol. You use it instead of the decimal point.

Use the Insert Symbol command from the Insert Tab. The cent sign (¢) should appear as an option. Or copy the cent sign in this answer and paste it in. *If the cent sign appears like it did in the answer, then use the Paste Special options (a little Auto-Correct type feature that appears when you paste material).

Why isn't there a cent or degree symbol on the US keyboard?

The degree symbol isn't used that much. You can however find it in the symbol section on Word and Excel among other programs. As for the cent sign it is quite simple that it is easier to miss at first. It is much easier to have them written out like $0.05 then to have 5 and then the cent sign. This makes it not only easier to count in checkbooks or on the excel program, but it leaves less room for a mistake. There really is no need for it. In most things that you are going to do you will use the other way to write then the cent sign.
