There should be an slanted "I" near the top of your Microsoft word window. I'm not sure which version of word you're using so I can't give much more information. I'm using 2007 and so, there's a home tab in which you select and then click on the symbol to be able to use italics.

If you can't choose the option from a text editor, and you're using the content in a blog entry/online etc, you must add the <i> tag before the content you want in italics, and close it with a </i>tag at the end of the text you want italicized.
