In The Bible, the original language word 'Lord' carries the thought of 'ownership'.

Jesus is called 'Lord of lords' implying there are many other 'lords' or possessors of power, authority, and ownership.

Jesus can be called Lord, because according to the Bible's theme, Adam and Eve, by their sin, 'sold' their future potential offspring within their loins; sold them into 'slavery' of sin and it's resulting consequence, death. With his own blood, Christ Jesus 'purchased' mankind from this heritage from Adam. With that purchase, he now owns mankind. Therefore he is our Lord.

2 Corinthians 5:15 states that because of this 'ownership' over mankind, we should live 'no longer for ourselves, but for him who died for us'. Many people of course do not do that. So the Bible indicates that at some time in the future, Christ will come as Lord, as our owner, to settle accounts. That's why the expression: "Vengeance is mine, says the Lord".
