It is easy to accidentally overwrite a file if you are updating a basic template (e.g. committee minutes or a resume.) If you have closed the document you are toast. Your only hope is to try to find an auto-saved version.
HOWEVER, if you hit SAVE instead of SAVE AS and you still have the document open do this:
1. Select all (CTRL A); Copy (CTRL C)
2. Open a new blank document and paste (CTRL V) your revised text in
3. Return to the one you want to recover. Use the UNDO command (CTRL Z) until you have backed out all the changes. Could take a while but should restore your document to its original state. SAVE again.
4. Now go to the NEW document and SAVE AS the new name.
Best practice: immediately do SAVE AS the new name when you open the document before making changes.

∙ 12y agoIf you haven't got earlier copies saved elsewhere, then I'm afraid it's imposible. (I'm presuming that you are talking about opening a saved file, rather than saving it and then realising while you still have the document open, that you want to regress.)
In the latter, the undo button/ shortcut (ctrl + z) (Cmd +z for apple) should still work with the vast majority of programs.
To avoid this happening to you again, in Microsoft Word (and I presume the same is true for the rest of office) go to file - preferences click on the save tab and select "always create backup copy". That means, that when you save a file, the previous save is kept as a backup. To open this file, got to the folder you saved the document in and look for a file that has the same name as the saved document, but ends in a .wbk extension. Right click this file, choose "open with" and then Microsoft word.
Sorry I can't help do what you want, but at least it doesn't need to happen again. :)
