In Kingdom Hearts , all you have to do is complete the world you are in (this usually includes sealing the key hole) and a new world should open up . However , sometimes you have to go back to a previous world to do some sort of special mission. In instances such as this , a character in the game should give you some sort of hint as to where to go . Of course , if all else fails and you really don't know what to do , you should go online and look up cheats . A really good place to look up cheats is gamefaq . Gamespot is also very satisfactory . How do you unlock places on kingdom hearts 2?
You can unlock new worlds by completing the wold before it, since there are two sets, one beginning with Land of the Dragon, unlocked after leaving Twilight Town as Sora, and completing the story for Hollow Bastion. The second side of the map is unlocked after Disney Castle. To unlock worlds you have previously visited, but are now blocked off by the fog, you'll have to complete the new stories for a certain number of worlds.

Square Enix has recently announced 'Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance' for the new Nintendo 3DS. Not much is known about Kingdom Hearts 3D, except that it will center around Riku and Sora, and will utilize the system's 3D features. 3D: Dream Drop Distance will feature all new Disney worlds, as well as some previous original worlds. What is the story for Kingdom Hearts 2?
Kingdom Hearts 2 is the sequel of Kingdom Hearts, in Kingdom Hearts 1, it was just about Heartless and killing Ansem for the final fight to end the Heartless' attacks for hearts. In Kingdom Hearts 2, it has Heartlesses and Nobodies, the empty shells of the bodies that the Heartless have the taken the heart from. The final fight in Kingdom Hearts 2 is Xemnas, ironically, the Nobody of Ansem, which is a Heartless. In Kingdom Hearts 2, Sora gets taller, so he gets new clothes, new Keyblades, new abilities and all sorts. But the overall way of playing and story is the same. Go to worlds of all sorts from Disney to kill Heartless and Nobodies to eventually meet Organisation XIII, the leader of the Nobodies and fight Xemnas, the leader.

If you're talking about when a world gets shrounded by a black cloud, you need to complete other worlds because they are being taken over by darkness. Once you have completed other worlds, each dark world will slowly re-unlock and will have a new series of tasks and levels to complete.
