You can try opening the center drawer. That should open the side drawers.
I'm not answering, I'm just adding so it makes sense (Cause I wanted to get a regular set; bunk on top and desk on bottom. And another set with desk on top, and drawers or a small dresser on bottom. Then stick them side by side). That way you could have a desk up top so you could put a TV up there or have desk up by your bed for homework or something.
If you are installing new drawers the drawers with side runners are less likely to fall apart and break than drawers with bottom runners. They are slightly harder to install but in the long run are better.

Pull the drawer out as far as you can. Look for 2 levers on the slides. One on each side of the drawer just before the second segment of the slide. Push the left one up and the right one down and pull the drawer straight out. It will be snug but you will feel it move past the lever locks.
