You earn boosts by re-vaulting collections.... From the Mafia Wars page: "These one shot items can help you fight or defend better, and even give you discounts on energy required for jobs. Once consumed they are gone, so plan you actions wisely. You can only buy up to 20 of each boost each day. Bull Dog : You successfully revaulted the Poker Chips set and gained 7 Bulldogs (+18 fight defense skill). Use your boost in some fights now!
Sometimes they automatically out when you fight. Some Boost item has same effect, so re-vault to the best boost.
