There are basically two ways to do this. the most popular method is to place a pointer on a smooth board with the alphabet and numbers 0 to 9 and the words Yes and no on it. the pointers are ready made with some store bought boards. if you do not have a pointer you can use a small glass like a shot glass placed upside down on the board, usually this is done by between 2 and four people gently placing their finger on the glass together. It pays to have a bit of atmosphere like subdued light and perhaps some very quiet calm music in the background. the participants have a leader to keep things organized and it also pays to have someone to the side with pen and paper to write down the results as they happen. In any case when you are all settled with the fingers lightly placed on the glass or pointer you wait. usually the pointer will start to move. now this can be because someone in the group is cheating or for other more mysterious reasons. At this point the leader asks "is there anyone there?" then with any luck the pointer will start to move to the yes or to one of the letters stop and d move on to the next letter until the question is answered. you have to act seriously to get the best results be polite when you ask questions and record everything on paper. I have been involved with this a few times and you can get some amazing effects and messages that imparted knowledge we could not have had. An interesting version on the pointer that makes it even more difficult to cheat is to make simple cross from two pieces of balsa wood each piece of the cross being about 1' 6" long as thick as a piece of 3 ply and 1/4 wide make an equal cross out of it by making a hole in the center of each slat then putt a pointer (about 3" long) through the holes to make a cross with a pointer pointing down in the center. the cross is extremely light and is supported on top of the fingers, it is not held by any one. this makes it just about impossible to cheat
