How does spraying fruit trees with water before the frost comes keep the trees from freezing?

Water keeps trees from freezing because the water releases heat when it freezes. That heat raises the temperature of the tree, the air around the tree and the soil, preventing ice formation in the tissues of the tree. Cold water should be sprayed on the blossom of fruit trees after frost has occurred but before the sun has risen to melt the frost.

Can grey water be used to water apple trees?

Yes. With the proviso that we have only been doing it for three years, our apple trees seem to be doing just fine being irrigated solely with graywater and rain water (we are in San Diego, so not that much rain). We do not recycle our washer water, because it was not convenient to do so-- so we only re-use shower, bathtub, and bathroom sink water. Our apple trees are doing just fine. Our Anna and Gordon apple trees are especially vigorous and productive. We also have a couple of Fuji, Golden Dorsett, Pink Lady, and a couple of new trees-- Gala, Cinnamon Spice, Rubinette, and Honeycrisp. Too early to tell for sure about the last list, but so far so good. From what I can tell, there has never been a case of health problems caused by graywater, and the scientific consensus is that it is perfectly safe for use on fruit trees if you discharge the graywater at ground level or below ground, and do not spray the fruit with it.
