If you want an easy way to make it look like the character is walking then, copy and past multiple frames of the Sprite in theedit sprite area. Then click show preview and edit each sprite to make it look like movement. Make the differences slight, if you want fluid looking movement. Make sure that you do not change the speed unless you plan to match it in the game's rooms. There are sprites online at yoyogames.com if you want some.
I hope, that this information was helpful.

If you try to do it for free you will ALWAYS have lower quality, but if you must have it for free you should go to yoyogames.com. Download the free light version of game maker and then you have a very very basic game maker that deals with rooms and sprites. However, if you do get some money I suggest Macromedia Flash 8. It is my personal favorite.
You make sprites that have the gun equiped all ready then make it so when your person touches the thing it changes its sprite
