The key to pinch harmonics, also known as "squealies" is simply - 1. Gripping the pick with your index finger, middle finger, and thumb (and possibly your ring finger aswell), and having the end of the pick approximately 3-5 millimeters away from your thumb. 2. Pluck the string, (most pinch harmonics sound good at frets 3, 5, 7, 9, and 12 on most strings, usually the fourth or third string is the best for it) and gently swipe your thumb against the string as you sway down with your fingers. It's as simple as that - just making sure your thumb barely nicks the string as you go down. It should produce a very high pitch, (probably several octives up of the original fret you have it on) and sounds good when you bend the string immediately afterwards.

Can you tell me about the different techniques used to play string harmonics on the cello?

String harmonics on the cello are produced by lightly touching the string at specific points while bowing, creating a higher pitch than the regular notes. Techniques include natural harmonics, artificial harmonics, and pinch harmonics. Natural harmonics are played by lightly touching the string at specific nodal points, while artificial harmonics involve using two fingers to create the harmonic. Pinch harmonics are created by plucking the string with the thumb while touching it lightly at a specific point.

What are pinch harmonics?

pinch harmonics are a guitar technique used to get really high pitched sounds by holding the pick with about 3mm of your thumb below it and strumming. If you do it right the string will bounce off you thumb after you strum and create a harmonic. This is incredibly hard to master and is affected by where you strum. This means that for every fret there are certain spots on the string you can use to create pinch harmonics that you can either find by trial and error or if you know how harmonics actually work you can find them fairly easily. There are a lot of youtube videos explaining this and how to find the harmonic locations but this is incredibly hard to learn and even harder to get them to work with any regularity.
