To bowdlerise a piece of writing, is to edit it to make it more "suitable" for women and children - that is to change or remove sexual references and "bad" language.

It is named after Thomas Bowdler, who produced "The Family Shakespeare" in 1807, to ridicule from many quarters. Using bowdlerise: Using "God!" as an exclamation was bowdlerised by replacing it with "Heavens!"
