An overthrow in cricket is a mistake by the fielding side that allows the batsmen to score more runs. When a fielder throws the ball back to the wicket, if it isn't stopped by one of the close fielders, it will carry on to the other side of the field. This may give the batsmen time to complete another run; runs scored in this way are called overthrows. Sometimes the throw is so wayward that the ball crosses the boundary for four, these four runs are added to any that the batsmen score by running. A typical sentence would be;

"The batsmen scrambled a single, but the return from coverpoint went for four overthrows"
