Example sentence - The physical workout is demanding.

Important: "Workout" (one word) is a noun referring to exercise. "Work out" is the related verb and is always written as two words. The same rule applies to any combination involving a verb and a preposition. For example:

  • "Pickup" is a noun or adjective; e.g. a pickup truck. The action is two words: "Please pick up your clothes." (not 'pickup' your clothes)
  • "Slowdown": Congestion caused a major slowdown on the freeway. The action is again two words: "All the cars had to slow down." (not 'slowdown')

The reason for this is that, at least in English, you can't make a past tense (-ed) or gerund (-ing) if a verb and preposition are written as a single word. Otherwise you'd end up with bizarre combinations like "pickupped" or "slowdowning" which are definitely NOT words!
