Microsoft Word started using docx files in 2007
DOCX is the filename extension for Microsoft Office 2007 Word documents. DOCX files do not contain macros. The old DOC extension is being phased out by Microsoft.
A .docx file is a Microsoft Office Word document, but is only compatible with Microsoft Office Word 2007 and Microsoft Office Word 2010. A .doc file is compatible with previous versions of Microsoft Office Word.
because office 2007 formats are not compatible with older versions and Microsoft wanted to be sure you don't try to open it with older office like 2003 for example. if you still want to use old version of office and open newer files like .docx go to Microsoft download page and download compatibility pack for your office. its official, free and working :)
Because by default, the Office 2007 version of Word uses DOCX, not the traditional DOC.
.docx, all Office 2007 have a "x" on the end.
Save document as .doc (not .docx)
.docx The extension docx is used in Word 2007.
The files ending in .DOC are the designation for Word 2003 (and earlier). Files ending in .DOCX are the newer version files. The .DOCX files are a different format of file altogether. The .DOCX file is actually a ZIPped archive, with files inside of it based on XML language. If you want, you can rename a .DOCX (or .XLSX) file to have a .ZIP extension, then double click it and it will open up the ZIP archive and show the other files.
