The files ending in .DOC are the designation for Word 2003 (and earlier). Files ending in .DOCX are the newer version files.

The .DOCX files are a different format of file altogether. The .DOCX file is actually a ZIPped archive, with files inside of it based on XML language. If you want, you can rename a .DOCX (or .XLSX) file to have a .ZIP extension, then double click it and it will open up the ZIP archive and show the other files.
