An uncashed check usually says to cash within 30-90 days. After that time, a bank does not have to honor it. However, it can choose to do so.
Why are checks void after 6 months?
Because that is the rule. If someone does not cash a check paid out to him for that long, probably he has either lost it or does not wish to cash it.
