Why is red eye flights called red eye?

red - eye flights are a really late or early (depends on how you wanna look at it) transportation flight to get to your destination . The reason why officials call it the red eye flight is because of its early take off (ex: 1:00 am ; 2:00 am ) that people wake up with blood shot eyes because its so early in the morning .
