The best way to format your hard drive without a Windows disc is to obtain a copy of Linux (any distribution will do) and run the installer, making sure that you select options to use the whole hard drive. You will then have a hard drive with Linux on it which you can either keep on your computer, or install another OS on top. An alternative method is to use Darik's Boot and Nuke, which will destroy the data on most hard drives. You can get it from dban.sourceforge.net.

∙ 15y agoYou need to boot from something other than the C: drive. You can still get old floppy boot disks and bootable USB memory sticks are available. If nothing else is available, remove the hard drive, connect it as "slave" in another system and "format" the drive.

To wipe a hard drive, you would normally need a recovery CD which is normally provided by the manufacturer. Reboot your PC with a CD which has a shredder and partitioning tool on it. You can then proceed to wipe the hard drive using the tools on the CD.
